By downloading, installing, or using the Humanity Tax app, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of our Service.
This policy complies with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and aligns with global best practices including Apple App Store and Google Play Store requirements.
Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information to provide and improve our tax-filing services:
a) Personal Identification Information
- Full name, date of birth, filing status
- Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
- Email address and mobile phone number
- Residential address (for state tax filing)
b) Financial Information
- Income details (wages, self-employment, capital gains, dividends, other sources)
- W-2, 1099, and other IRS tax forms imported from employers and institutions
- Deduction and credit details (mortgage interest, charitable donations, 401(k), HSA, etc.)
- Bank account details (routing & account number for direct deposit of refund only)
- Estimated tax payment records
c) Device & Usage Information
- Device type, operating system, and version
- App usage logs, crash reports, and performance data
- IP address and approximate location (city/state level)
- Push notification tokens
d) Documents You Upload
- W-2s, 1099s, receipts, mortgage statements, and other supporting documents
- Any other documents voluntarily uploaded to the Document Vault
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- Tax Filing: To prepare, review, and e-file your federal and state tax returns with the IRS and applicable state agencies on your behalf.
- Account Management: To create and manage your Humanity Tax account, authenticate your identity, and provide customer support.
- Service Improvement: To analyze usage patterns and improve the app's features, accuracy, and user experience.
- Notifications: To send you filing reminders, refund status updates, IRS deadline alerts, and important policy changes.
- Legal Compliance: To comply with applicable US federal and state laws, regulations, and government requests.
- Fraud Prevention: To detect, investigate, and prevent fraudulent transactions and other illegal activities.
- CPA Support: To enable licensed CPAs on our platform to review and advise on your tax return (only with your explicit consent).
Data Security
We implement industry-leading security measures to protect your data:
- 256-bit AES Encryption for all data stored on our servers
- TLS 1.3 encryption for all data in transit between the app and our servers
- IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) support — we never store your full SSN in plaintext
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA) available for your account login
- Regular third-party security audits and penetration testing
- Strict role-based access controls — only authorized personnel can access your data
- Compliance with ISO 27001 information security management practices
While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your data, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention
We retain your personal and financial data for as long as necessary to provide the Service and comply with our legal obligations:
- Active accounts: Data is retained for the duration of your account plus 7 years (as recommended by the IRS for federal tax record-keeping).
- Deleted accounts: Upon account deletion, personal data is purged within 30 days, except data we are legally required to retain.
- Documents in vault: Retained until you delete them or close your account.
- Usage logs: Anonymized analytics data may be retained for up to 2 years.
Your Rights
You have the following rights with respect to your personal data:
- Access: Request a copy of all personal data we hold about you.
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated personal data (subject to legal retention requirements).
- Portability: Request your tax data in a machine-readable format (JSON/CSV).
- Withdraw Consent: Withdraw consent for optional data processing (e.g., marketing emails) at any time.
- Opt-out of Notifications: Manage notification preferences in the app under Settings → Notifications.
California residents may also have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know about, delete, and opt out of the sale of personal information. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@humanitytax.com. We will respond within 45 days as required by law.
Children's Privacy
The Humanity Tax Service is intended for individuals who are 18 years of age or older and are eligible to file tax returns in the United States. In compliance with COPPA, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a minor, please contact us immediately at privacy@humanitytax.com and we will delete such information promptly.
Third-Party Services
Our Service integrates with the following third-party services. Each has their own privacy policy governing their data practices:
- IRS e-file System (irs.gov) — for federal return submission and data retrieval
- State Revenue Agencies — for state return e-filing (varies by state)
- Firebase (Google) — for push notifications and crash analytics
- Stripe / Payment Gateway — for processing payments (we do not store card details)
- AWS / Cloud Hosting — for secure data storage
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party services and encourage you to review their respective privacy policies.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will:
- Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page
- Send a push notification and/or email to registered users
- Display a prominent in-app banner for 30 days after the change
Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the new Privacy Policy. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
